Mosquitoes in Greece, annoying visitors or dangerous carriers of diseases?
Summer in Greece is accompanied by high temperatures, nature vacations and of course the presence of mosquitoes. Most of us consider them a daily nuisance, however, some species can pose a serious threat to public health. What are the most important facts and how can we protect ourselves according to the recommendations of the National Public Health Organization (EODY).
Mosquito-related diseases in Greece
Although approximately 60 species of mosquitoes have been recorded in Greece, only a few species are considered dangerous to humans and public health. The main problems they can cause to humans are:
West Nile Virus
Since 2010, cases of West Nile Virus, which is transmitted mainly by mosquitoes of the genus Culex, have been identified every year. In the majority of cases, the infection does not cause symptoms, however, in a small percentage, serious complications in the central nervous system are observed, especially in vulnerable groups.
Malaria
Malaria in Greece has been eradicated since 1974, however, sporadic local cases have been occurring since 2009. The disease is transmitted by mosquitoes of the genus Anopheles, when they bite an infected person and then transmit the parasite to others. EODY implements epidemiological surveillance and preventive actions every year, especially in areas with increased risk.

The best prevention tactic remains avoiding breeding grounds and protecting yourself from bites.
Limiting standing water
Remove standing water from flowerpot saucers, buckets, tanks, old tires, gutters and downspouts. Even small amounts of water can be a breeding ground for mold.
Installing a screen
Installing screens on windows, doors and air vents prevents mosquitoes from entering indoors.
Use of fans and air conditioners
The wind discourages mosquito activity, reducing the chances of them approaching you.
